Meeting 12/5/12

Hey everyone,

We only have two more meetings left this semster, and tonight we will be discussing some of our plans for the spring.

Also, don't forget that we have two big events tomorrow:

1) We will be Skyping with artist Aya Kakeda at 1PM in Room 314

2) We will be screening our final fall movie, AKIRA, at 7PM in the atrium. Special thanks to Monique Connett who made a great poster illustration in a pinch this week.

And finally, we have confirmation that we will be Skyping with designer and illustrator, Brian Gossett next Wednesday during our last Wednesday night meeting. Look up his incredibly impressive work!

Meeting 9/12/12

Hi everyone,

Thanks so much to everyone who came to the meeting last night! We are just getting started and I hope you continue to come to the meetings as it keeps the momentum of the group moving and we have a lot of fun things planned.

First off I want to remind everyone that submissions for the Illustration 24 logo contest have to be at next weeks meeting, Wednesday the 19th. This is a great chance to do something creative that will be seen by a lot of people! Additionally it's a great opportunity to show everyone what we can do as a group and play a bigger role in an event that hopefully will continue to grow as it happens annually. Also a note, we are going to be screen printing the logo onto T-Shirts so they need to be one color and typically anything smaller than a .05 micron (sorry for the odd measurement but I'm guessing you all have a rough idea of what that is) will not print well. I'm attaching the current mark that is being used and will be replaced by the winning design.

Also, last night we voted on the movies we will be screening for movie night and we will be watching Summer Wars, The Illusionist and Akira. Start thinking about poster designs! We print some 8x11 and some 9x13. I am including an Illustrator template that Charlie created last year so you can just drop your design into that or if you would like you can do all the lettering and information yourself. Hey everybody,

I hope you all enjoyed last night's first meeting. Even though it was mostly information, I am sure it was info everyone was excited to have. There are two very important things that I need to tell you now in anticipation of next week's meeting.

1) We WILL BE VOTING next week on all three movies that SOI will screen this semester, one each for the months of October, November, and December.

Last year for the sake of saving time the officers selected a few movies each for the group to vote on. This year we want this process to be more democratic, so we are asking each of you to submit ONE movie suggestion. The movie that you nominate can be live-action or animation, but must have some kind of relevance to art and/or illustration, whether in theme, content, production, or even if it is just an excellent animated film. Here is what I need from you:

- E-mail me the name of your film and a very brief description of it. (In case neither I nor the other officers have seen it already.)
- Deadline for suggestions is noon next Wednesday, the 12th. (This way there can be a master list ready prior to the meeting.)

Voting will be held during our meeting. Each member will choose three films that they would like to see this year. The three films with the most overall votes will be selected, and the officers and I will choose their showing dates and announce them shortly after the meeting via e-mail.

Now on to the second item:

2) 2 weeks from today, submissions for Illustration 24 logos will be due.

We will give you the exact final presentation specs next week, but we encourage you to start sketching NOW. The logo must include "Illustration 24" and the sub-header "and 24-Hour Draw."

The last bit of news is that a permanent meeting location is in the works. I will be e-mailing you all our new room number very soon, so keep checking your inboxes!

Here are our events for the week:

3/28/12 meeting at 7PM:

Unfortunately, Tim Truman who was going to be meeting with us this semester has been ill and will be undergoing an operation next week. Due to recovery time we will not get to meet with him until the fall. To wish him the best and thank him for his intentions to meet with us, tomorrow's meeting will be dedicated to doing some drawings based on his work. Tim is a locally based illustrator and comic book artist who has worked on such titles as Conan and is the co-creator of Grimjack. This is a great opportunity to make some nice drawings as a group and reach out to a fellow illustrator as we will be sending pieces to Tim as a get-well package.

Banksy Poster Deadline:

We are pushing the deadline for "Exit Through the Gift Shop" poster submissions to next Wednesday, April 4th, which is one week before our screening of the film.

Also, keep in mind that next Wednesday is an official meeting and we will be voting on officers for the next school year.

Upcoming Zak Smith Skype Visit

I just wanted to get this out there to create some interest in the next skype artist talk we'll be doing with Zak Smith! www.zaxart.com (Yes, his website is god awful, but his paintings/drawings are about as amazing as his site is poorly designed so check them out!) I just got confirmation from him that we'll be talking to him next Thursday (March 29th). I'm really excited and my plan now is to get you all as excited as I am so please, look at his website, read his blog (he's very smart, very funny and very insightful) and find me in school so I can show you his book "Pictures Showing What Happens on Each Page of Thomas Pynchon's Novel Gravity's Rainbow" which is a collection of about 760 drawings and paintings he did that...well....show what happens on each page of Thomas Pynchon's novel Gravity's Rainbow. Also, think of some awesome questions to ask and tell your friends!
In addition, I also just heard back from artist John Dyer Baizley http://aperfectmonster.com/ (much prettier website) who expressed interest in actually coming to the school and spending time with us which is incredibly exciting so check out his work! He does a lot of work for bands and musicians, mostly other bands on the label his band Baroness is signed to, Relapse Records, but has also done some work for Flight of the Conchords and Gillian Welch's latest release "The Harrow and The Harvest". All great stuff.

Tonight's meeting was scheduled to be a night to work on the Buzz Worthy Gallery show, but because the past two days have gone so smoothly, ALL OF THE WORK IS DONE!! That being said, we have absolutely nothing planned for tonight. NOTHING. Bob suggested that we take it as a night to celebrate our success in the setting up the gallery. So, I will certainly be there in Room 213. I was thinking that we could do a longer version of Exquisite Corpse for all of you who played last semester. Also, I will be officially announcing the movies that we will be showing this semester and the dates. Finally, I would request that anyone who comes tonight take a small stack of "Buzz Worthy" postcards and take some time out tonight or tomorrow to hand them out to businesses, friends, family, etc. I've already hit a few places around town, but we need to get the word out everywhere we can before the show opens this Friday at 5.

First off, apologies to anyone who may have been confused about tonight's meeting. In the e-mail that I sent out last Wednesday I advertised that tonight we would be talking with Andy Zubko via Skype. In the future I will send out reminders the day before each meeting about what's going on that week as I have in the past. Despite that, we did have a decent turn-out tonight and although we had a few connection problems, we had a great talk with Andy about his career and involvement with LAIKA, the production company working on the stop-animation film ParaNorman, which comes out this summer. On the subject of artist talks, we already have two more Skype sessions scheduled. The first will be with Scott C. 2 weeks from today at 1PM lunch on February 8th in Room 213, and the next will be with Caitlin Hackett the following week on Thursday February 16th also at 1PM in Room 213. Concerning the BUZZWORTHY Gallery Show: The task has been given to me to acquire some very vital information from the artists displaying work at this event. Please read this carefully and send the required information to me AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. 1) How would like your name to be displayed next to your artwork? (i.e. Full name, nickname, your choice, etc.) 2) What is the scientific Latin name of the insect that you illustrated 3) What media did you use? 4) Will you be selling your piece? (If YES, your piece will be sold for $200, $100 of which will be put toward the PCAD Scholarship Fund and the remaining half will go to you. Pieces cannot be sold for any other amount. If NO, then a "NFS" will be displayed with your work to state that the piece is not for sale.) It is very important that we have this information to prepare the show in time for its opening next Friday, Feb. 3rd. MORE URGENT INFO THAT I NEED! SOI will be showing 3 movies this semester, one each month. The other officers and I have compiled a list of possibilities for you to vote on. The reason we did not cover this in a meeting was so you could have time to look into these movies and see what interests you. There is a very wide variety of films from documentaries, to action, to animation, and more! Each movie was selected either because of its direct relationship to illustration/animation, excellent art direction or art-related subject matter, or some other element that ties into who we are as illustrators and animators. I will list the movies here below. We encourage you to read about or watch a preview for anything you may not have heard of. I will list them by which of us suggested each film, so that if you have any questions about one you can ask the right person. VOTING: We are trying to narrow the pool down to JUST THREE MOVIES, so what I need from each of you is to vote for 3 different movies that interest you, numbering them 1-3 starting with the one that you are most interested in. Because we plan on showing the first movie next week, I need you to get these votes in to me by Friday at 5PM, so that I have time to work up a poster and advertise its showing. Once you have picked your top three just e-mail them to me and on Friday I will tally up the votes of everyone that has voted. "Art & Copy"- Award-winning documentary about the advertising industry "Milton Glaser: To Inform and Delight"- documentary about the life and work of one of the greatest graphic designers of all time Nick's Picks: "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari"- German Expressionist silent film from 1920 about a sleepwalker's predictions of death, that is one of the greatest influences on the works of imaginative directors like Tim Burton.
